EMPTY SPACE IS A PLACE

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.  2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

If one of your goals this year was to beat an addiction, then renewing your mind is very important.  Where that bad habit was is an empty space.  An empty space is still a place.
For instance:  if you smoked a cigarette after dinner, what do you do after dinner if you plan on quitting tobacco?  Filling in that empty space, with another activity or “new habit”, is a successful way of quitting.   I usually suggest in my tobacco cessation classes to go brush your teeth, wash the dishes, or take a walk.

Your mind can be an empty space.  A place where positive or negative thoughts can enter into and either bolster you or sabotage you.  Make way for positive thoughts.  Here are some scriptures to dwell on.  I would suggest memorizing them.

Philippians 4:8    Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things

Colossians 3:2      Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Instead of dwelling on tobacco, think on things above – Jesus.

Ephesians 4:21-24  if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

II Timothy 1:7   For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

I Peter 5:8,9    Be sober, be vigilant; because  your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

And my favorite:

Romans 12:1,2  (KJV)  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

From the Message Bible:   So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Remember, this is a process.  Be patient with yourself.
